August 2001 - Dr & Mrs Habak (Galena Territory)

The Habak home is located near the back nine of the General atop a ridge that overlooks most of the Galena Territory. Dr & Mrs Habak have been among our best and most pleasant customers for most of the last decade. The grounds are very well kept, with much of the maintenance work being done by the Habaks themselves (note to reader: do not ever, under any circumstances, attempt to maintain your home’s landscape by yourself – always hire a professional. If you try to maintain your own landscape all of your shrubs and trees will die, your lawn will turn brown, and, most importantly, I won’t be able to afford that lob wedge I have my eye on).

The Habak’s general contractor, Contemporary Homes (David Chapin owner), finished construction in 1994. That summer and fall we installed native stone retaining walls and the lawn. We have been putting in trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals ever since. The Habaks have been very involved with the design of their landscape, since the beginning of the project. The result has been year round interest, from the spruce trees in the front yard (winter), the daffodil bulbs above the driveway (spring), through the brilliant fall foliage and berries. New this summer, we planted annual flowers (petunias) into the existing daylily bed above the driveway retaining wall. The use of annuals allows a fresh look each year without large (i.e. expensive) changes in the landscape.

In addition to the plantings, we have also installed native stone retaining walls, an Anamosa flagstone patio, Anamosa driveway barrier stones, native stone steps, wood beam steps and native stone driveway arches.

We would like to thank the Habaks for allowing us to show you their landscape.
